SWANS, Einsturzende Neubauten and Big Black created enough overwhelming sonic pressure their sounds might actually flatten you. And Sonic Youth displayed such a dizzyingly unpredictable mix of art, pop culture and violence you'd sometimes leave their shows drooling. The Buttholes shared elements with all of these groups, but added an insane psychedelic edge and a propensity for bizarre spectacle. 40 years later, Butthole Surfers have announced their first batch of reissues in collaboration with Matador Records certain to raise the roof for a lot of people who thought they had a pretty good handle on the outer realms of the '80s indie-rock scene.'PCPPEP' was the first to feature the power of the band's classic two drummer line-up (King Coffey and Teresa Taylor). The synchronized percussive brutarianism of this pair (falsely rumored to be siblings) provided the perfect base for the unhinged blurt of the guitars and vocals then being shared by Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary. 'Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac' was also wildly advanced over the previous records. Parts of the LP swaddled their punk edge inside so much oink and babble you almost couldn't discern it, with other segments stretching out into a mutant form of garage blues, and others just swirling out of control.This evolution continued on 'Rembrandt Pussyhorse,' mixing rock-based form destruction with experimental, tape-mangling passages of many flavors. Meanwhile, their live shows became legendary examples of excess and derangement, and their music just kept getting louder and stranger and more savage. It was the diametric opposite of the hardcore scene from which it had emerged, which was heading in ever more codified and stylistically conservative directions.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1366/5653/files/butthole-surfers-rembrandt-pussyhorse-9404057.jpg?v=1784978347
cherubs-slo-blo-4-frnz-sxy
Cherubs - Slo Blo 4 Frnz & Sxy
Limited red colored vinyl LP pressing. A follow up to their critically acclaimed Immaculada High (2019), the new EP capitalizes on the musical frenzy and shining moments of the latest full length, resulting in another dose of the legendary band's take on punk infused noise rock. Lead track "A Pair of Pear Tarts" explodes out of the speakers - Kevin Whitley's vocals are at the forefront once again, backed by absolutely raucous drumming and whirry, fuzzed out bass and guitars. "Lazy Snakes" continues this momentum; the trademark psychedelic qualities of Cherubs heaviness are at the forefront as drums rinse and repeat as the song builds and builds. A constant source of imitation for so-called "noise rock" bands, it has yet to be surpassed in it's nihilistic glee. Recorded between October 1980 and August 1981 and released in 1982 on the indispensable Subterranean Records, this album functions as a chaotic, sticky mass of individual personalities: the magma-like bass eruptions and dual vocals of Will Shatter and Bruce Loose, Ted Falconi's icy guitar scraping and the relentless beat of drummer Steve DePace. At times playful and taciturn, paranoid and absurd, Generic charts a deliberate path that willfully chances destruction. In early '80s punk, when the hardening default was "faster-shorter-louder," Generic subverts the nascent hardcore scene with a strictly applied regimen of turgid-slower-heavier. The lyrics are bleak, yet unnervingly beautiful. "Ever" sets the tone with trademark restraint-"Ever wish the human race didn't exist? And then realize you're one too?"-while closer "Sex Bomb" is a churning, 8-minute epic with looping bass, saxophone accompaniment and electronic effects of dropping bombs. Tons of indie bands have attempted to recreate Flipper's mix of acidic guitar, metallic bass sludge and sardonically brilliant lyricism, using the seemingly effortless template they pioneered; however, the effect usually drives listeners right back to Generic. While most of their contemporaries wilt under direct comparison, No Trend, the Butthole Surfers, feedtime and Church Police are a few who can stand the frigid heat.
*BACK IN PRINT!!! BEER CITY SKATEBOARDS AND RECORDS is proud to bring you another hard hitting early 80's hardcore/punk classic from back in the day. We bring you the restored and remastered Millennium reissue of the original mix of OFFENDERS - We Must Rebel Millennium Edition LP! Back in the early 80's Texas was churning out a fair share of bands that would go on to become legends in the hardcore/punk scene and beyond. The Offenders were no exception to this phenomenon. Anytime they played you knew as soon as they hit the stage they meant business and you were in for an intense experience like no other. This hardcore/punk scorcher originally came out in 1983. It was produced/recorded by the Butthole Surfers very own Paul Leary. It's very fast, furious and intense. It contains 10 songs that would soon become classics that blew people right out of the water and had them waiting in anticipation for the next release. By what would become this legendary hardcore/punk band. Fast forward to 2022. Not only did we restore and remaster this, but we also used the original mix and put it out on 45RPM so it's louder and sounds better then it ever has before. Of coarse we didn't stop there. The cover is a bit different to and printed as the band originally intended it to be. You'll get to hear all about that and more in the extensive liner notes by none other then OFFENDERS drummer Pat Doyle. He tells you all about this and much more. So if you want to own a part of hardcore/punk history that's just as ass kicking and as relevant as it was when it first came out. Pick up this release and never forget 'Don't Mess with Texas...
