Jake Garcia of The Black Angels explores the sounds and history of the golden era of 1960s psych and rock & roll in

13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR:

The Outsiders - Misfit

My favorite of the incredible Dutch groups of the 60s. A high point in my life was performing some songs with original guitarist/founding member Ronnie Spector in 2005 at Primitive Festival. RIP

Pan and Regaliz - Magic Colors

Colorful Spanish progressive music from 1971. I first heard this album in the amazing Umma Gumma bar in A Coruna, Spain. Can’t wait to go back to have more Licor Cafe and discover new music!

Neil Diamond - You’ll Forget

A moody gem from one of the best songwriters of all time.

Akofa Akoussa - La Lem

Deep, rich, and beautiful  Afro Psyche Funk from the master Togolese singer. Released in 1976 on Sonafric/France.

Buckinghams - Don’t Want to Cry

A 60s garage floor killer from the same Chicago group that later brought us the groovy song “Kind of a Drag.”

Electra Combo - Uber Feuer

Lost sounds from behind the wall of Eastern Germany. Incredible to know that this and more exists.

Incredible String Band - Koeeoaddi

They're incredible indeed! Kaleidoscopic folk from Scotland Circa 1968. They were the band that inspired Led Zeppelin to turn acoustic.

Canned Heat - Poor Moon

A fantastic mix of Doo-Wop, Hillbilly Music and Pre-War Blues. Check that groove! They were the coolest and The Beatles agree.

The Huns - Shakedown

Raw snarl and jangle from North Carolina on the Pyramid Label Circa 1966. The epitome of 60s garage, my favorite sound!

Piero Umiliani - Hippies, Pt.2

A fuzzy gem from the album “Psichedelica” Circa 1968. Italians do it best !

Novak’s Kappelle - Naked

A band with no boundaries and the song title says it all. They were considered the wildest group from Austria at the time and we can tell!

Pretty Things - The Good Mr.Square/ She Was Tall, She was High

From my favorite Pretty Things album “Parachute” circa 1970. This is a band that deserves more credit than they are given. Check out the full record from beginning to end for the full experience.

A New Dawn - We Need Each Other

Arthur Lee and “Love” vibes from this heady group. Feels like walking down a dirt road with no shoes. “There's A New Dawn” has been hailed as one of the rarest and best psych albums to come out of the late 60s / early 70s. Thanks to Christian Bland for the wonderful gift.

Until next time, take care and be well.
- Jake
