Jake Garcia of The Black Angels explores the sounds and history of the golden era of 1960s psych and rock & roll in 13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR. Tune in below! This playlist is updated with 13 new tracks on the 13th of each month.
13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR:
The Scotty McKay Quintet - Train-Kept-A-Rollin’
Killer 60’s garage from Dallas, Texas featuring Jimmy Page on the guitar solo. They mailed the master tape from Dallas to London and Jimmy did the blistering solo.
The Birds - Next In Line
A heavier version of the London sound featuring a young Ron Wood. He still has the same hairstyle after all of these years!
East of Eden - Isadora
From their brave psychedelic album “Mercator Projected” circa 1969.
Nick Drake - At the Chime of a Chimney Clock
A wonderful track from Nick Drake’s second album “Bryter Layter.” It’s too good for words.
Michael & the Messengers - Lips (Don't Mean Nothin')
Killer 60’s garage from Milwaukee.
Pearls Before Swine - Playmate
Psychedelic music driven by the Farfisa organ from their debut album “One Nation Underground” released on the ESP label.
13th Floor Elevators - (I've Got) Levitation
Happy Birthday Roky Erickson coming up Monday! We will have a tribute at The 13th Floor.
Loose Ends - Free Soul
12 string magic from Fort Worth, Texas circa 1965. The b-side “He’s a Nobody” is maybe better?
Supersister - Mexico
The psychedelic sounds from the Hague, Netherlands.
Los Brincos - Vive la Realidad
Track #2 from their stunning psychedelic album “Mundo Demonio Carne.” The concept behind the album was supposedly to be based on the three enemies of the soul: the world, the flesh, and the devil, hence the final title: World Devil Body.
Love - Softly to Me
Another gem from my favorite band of all-time.
Lula Cortes - Can I Be Satwa
From their only record “Satwa.” Written, recorded and released just as Brazil’s military dictatorship reached the climax of its long black arc. The album is a subtle protest.
Serge Gainsbourg - L'hôtel particulier
An epic track from his masterpiece album ‘’Histoire de Melody Nelson.” It would cost so much money to make this record today.
Until next time, thanks for listening!
