13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR | 12.13.24 - LEVITATION

Jake Garcia of The Black Angels explores the sounds and history of the golden era of 1960s psych and rock & roll in 13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR. Tune in below! This playlist is updated with 13 new tracks on the 13th of each month.

13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR:

Billy Nicholls - Would You Believe
Billy Nicholls was only 16 years old when he recorded this masterpiece in 1968. Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham, the album was a British response to The Beach Boys' “Pet Sounds.”

13th Floor Elevators - Through the Rhythm
Psychedelic sounds from the band that started it all in Austin, Texas circa 1966.

White Noise - Love Without Sound
The opening track from their groundbreaking album 'An Electric Storm'. This album released in 1969 is considered influential in the development of electronic music.

Cave Men - It's Trash
Recorded with home-made fuzz and 100% wild in 1966! From what I’ve read, they’ve added extra echo and drenched reverb to cover up pitchy vocals.

The Confederate Music Corps - The God of Love
The sound of McArthur, Ohio circa 1970. Special thanks to Miguel Sonosphere for turning me on to this.

Captain Beefheart - Zig Zag Wanderer
A swampy one from his debut record 'Safe As Milk'.

Powder - Magical Jack
A primitive version of power pop by the California Bay Area mod group that once backed Sonny and Cher.

The Third Rail - No Return
A psychedelic gem with the perfect hook created by NYC studio musicians in 1967.

Neil Ford & the Fanatics - I Will Not Be Lonely
Killer 60’s garage-punk that snarls from Houston, Texas.

The Dantes - Any Number Can Win
Fuzzed out in Kansas City circa 1968.

We All Together - It's a Sin to Go Away
There’s nothing else like Peruvian psych. This group was dialed in!

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
As raw as it gets, Eddie Hazel was a force of nature. His guitar work on this track is highly regarded as one of the greatest solos of all time on any instrument.

Scott Walker - 30 Century Man
A short track from his baroque psych masterpiece 'Scott 3'. His music got increasingly avant-garde and strange as the years passed and his voice is still one of my all time favorites.

Until next time, thanks for listening!
