Jake Garcia of The Black Angels explores the sounds and history of the golden era of 1960s psych and rock & roll in 13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR. Tune in below! This playlist is updated with 13 new tracks on the 13th of each month.
13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR:
The Rolling Stones - Off The Hook
The Rolling Stones in raw form circa 1964. This was one of their first originals as most of their songs were covers in the beginning.
Johnny Guitar Watson - Space Guitar
Incredible guitar drenched in reverb and speakers panning left to right. This studio experimentation in the 50’s would later lead to the psychedelic sound of the 60’s. His guitar playing is mind blowing on this!
Johnny Kidd and The Pirates - Restless
This song has one of my favorite guitar solos of all time. The late 50’s/early 60’s UK group was led by singer/songwriter Johnny Kidd and they all dressed like pirates with matching eyepatches! The Beatles must have been inspired by them.
The Mystic Tide - Stay Away
Dark and surfy garage sounds from Long Island, NY circa 1966.
The Paragons - Abba
Some killer 60’s garage from Charlotte, North Carolina. Thanks to Gregg Kostelich of The Cynics for turning me on to this years ago.
Fadoul - Bsslama Hbibti
Killer Arabic funk! They were said to be Morroco’s answer to James Brown.
The Doors - Peace Frog
A mover and a shaker from one of the best groups of all time. The Doors were discovered thanks to “Arthur Lee and Love” bringing Elektra Records to them.
Silver Apples - Lovefingers
Way ahead of their time with the original sound that they’ve crafted here. Especially that drumbeat circa 1968.
Parish Hall - My Eyes Are Getting Heavy
An excellent power trio from Canada with incredible tone and style circa 1970.
Yahowa 13 - I’m Gonna Take You Home
Authentic cult music. I recommend checking out “The Source” book/movie to find out more.
West Coast Art Experimental Band - A Child Of a Few Hours is Burning
An anti-war song from some psychedelic minds in the 1960’s. Will we ever learn from our mistakes?
Group 1850 - Friday I’m Free
Excellent Dutch psychedelia circa 1969. My favorite record of theirs is actually “Agemos Trip To Mother Earth” although this track is a standout and great representation of their unique sound.
Cosmic Jokers - Im Reich der Magier
The opening track from their record “Sci-Fi-Party.” This is what happens when a German supergroup gets together in the studio and experiments on acid. Originally released in 1974 as quadraphonic ! Thanks for listening.
Thanks for listening, until next time. Peace and love y’all.
