Jake Garcia of The Black Angels explores the sounds and history of the golden era of 1960s psych and rock & roll in 13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR. Tune in below! This playlist is updated with 13 new tracks on the 13th of each month.

13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR:

Johnny Thunder - I’m Alive
A really wild version of the Tommy James and The Shondells song. So
Killer!

101 Strings Orchestra - Flameout
The hip psychedelic sound of 1968.

The Chessmen - I Need You There
Fantastic 60’s garage from Denton, Texas circa 1965.

The Kinks - Two Sisters
Another brilliant track from these masters with some harpsichord magic happening. The lyrics are said to be inspired by Ray and Dave Davies’s relationship at the time.

Shady Daze - I’ll Make You Pay
Extreme fuzz from this Chicago garage group circa 1967. My favorite sound!

Googoosh - Talegh
Excellent 70’s Persian Funk from Iran with some psychedelic soul. Thanks to Sean Lennon for turning me on to this awhile back.

Nino Nardini - Mowgli
Favorite track from the incredible record “Jungle Obsession” circa 1971.

Association - The Time it is Today
A stoned gem from the group that brought us the hit “Never My Love.”

Harmonia - Dino
That classic German sound and rhythm that has inspired so many bands today including my own.

Suicide - GhostRider
The opening Farfisa driven track from their self-titled record from NYC circa 1977. They were true pioneers of their time.

Jimi Hendrix - Third Stone From the Sun
I know it’s cliche to put Hendrix on a playlist but let’s face it , he was the best ! and I’ll never get tired of listening to this one.

Skip Spence - Little hands
Spence had been committed to Bellevue Hospital following a delusion-driven attempt to attack his
Moby Grape bandmates with a fire axe.
The songs were written during the 6 months that he was committed and the album was recorded over 7days in 1969. I’m pretty certain that the tape was slowed down which gives it that haunted sound? Either way I think it turned out beautifully.

The Monkees - Porpoise Song
The theme song from their incredible movie “Head” circa 1968.

Thanks for listening, until next time. Peace and love y’all.
- Jake
