Jake Garcia of The Black Angels explores the sounds and history of the golden era of 1960s psych and rock & roll in 13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR!

The Gentlemen - It’s a Cry’n Shame

Fort Worth, Texas garage ripper from 1966. Absolutely killer!

Bernard Chabert- Helga Selzer

Groovy French tune with so much attitude! Perfect with bell-bottoms! Circa 1970.

Eddie Suzuki - City of Refuge

Hawaiian Gold and the feeling of Aloha circa 1974. An album that makes you feel like you are actually on the island. Thanks to my friend Pasta for letting me know this album has been reissued.

Moon Dog - Down is Up

Moon Dog (Louis Thomas Harden) was a blind street musician in New York City from the late 1940s until 1972. He was known as “the Viking of 6th Avenue” wearing a cloak and a horned helmet. This is his wonderful sound.

Van Dyke Parks - Palm Desert

From his magical album “Song Cycle” circa 1967. He was also part of the genius behind The Beach Boy’s album “Smile” and close friends with Brian Wilson. Also worth noting that he briefly performed on stage with Frank Zappa and the “Mothers of Invention” in their early incarnation, was asked to join “The Byrds” and later “Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young” but declined both invitations.

The Fender IV- Mar Gaya

The big surf sound! And my favorite track of this genre circa 1964.

The Pets - Hello, I love you

From Mexico 1968! The same year that the summer olympics were held there. What an extra wild and fuzzy version of this “Doors” track!?

The Glass Family - House of Glass

A haunting 60’s psychedelic gem from their album “Electric Band.” This has been reissued by “Light in the Attic” records.

Alain Goraguer - Deshominisation (I)

From the soundtrack of the incredible animated “Le Planete Sauvage” that won a Cannes film festival award in 1973. I remember watching this movie with my grandmother in the theatre as a young boy. A fond memory.

Nick Drake - Pink Moon

No words can describe the talent of Nick Drake; he was one of the best of all time. This is the opening track from his third and final album on Island Records circa 1972.

Shinki Chen - Requiem of Confusion

The heavy sound of confusion by Japanese power trio “Shinki Chen” circa 1971. They were one of Japan’s top psychedelic bands at the time and were often compared to The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Love - Orange Skies

The perfect end of summer song from the genius of Arthur Lee and “Love”; my favorite band of all time.

Tony Conrad and Faust - The Side of the Machine

Drone violinist Tony Conrad teams up with KrautRock legends “Faust” for a meditational journey circa 1973.

Thanks for listening, until next time. Take care!
