SOUNDCLOUD PODCAST

FONTAINES D.C. – Boys In The Better Land

These Dublin boys don’t play. Straight to the face riffs with assertively genuine, yet cynically removed vocals that harken back to the days of Hex Enduction Hour.

Automatic – Calling It

Dystopian and discordant synth punk. Part ESG, part John Carpenter. Brilliant.

The Dirtbombs – Sharivari

Mick Collins’ response to growing up in Detroit and being inspired by the techno scene while still finding his voice in the rock ‘n roll and garage scene. One of my favorite versions of all time. The Original by “Number Of Names” is credited as one of the first ever Detroit Techno songs.

Peaking Lights – Mirror In The Sky

I could party on a boat in the Mediterranean sea all night this one. Deep house dub vibes that you’re unable to not move to.

Four Tet – Teenage Birdsong

This one reminds me of dude’s early work. I remember him being one of the first producers I heard that incorporated elements of genres like krautrock and ambient. I hadn’t heard anything like that before and it opened me up to a whole new world of possibilities musically.

Ras G – All Is Well…

Rest in peace to Ras G. One of the founding members of the incredibly influential Brainfeeder label and one of the most unique producers to have ever touched an SP-404. May the ancestors welcome him.

Vuelveteloca – L.A. (AL Lover Remix)

A remix I did for the amazing Chilean psych band Vuelveteloca. It was an honor to be asked to be involved in this project.

Yndi Halda – A Sun-Coloured Shaker (Prefuse 73 Remix)

Prefuse 73 was another producer who, when I initially got into sampling, I listened to in order to deconstruct what he was doing. He always had such an original approach and a wealth of musical knowledge. This track is a remix of a current post rock band out of Kent, UK, Yndi Halda

Samiyam – Number 13 (Bellz)

More Brainfeeder affiliated madness. I can imagine this being one made at 4am to candle light glimmering through a bottle of empty red wine.

Larraaji, Arji OceAnanda & Dallas Acid – This Much More

Austin’s Dallas Acid had the pleasure of teaming up with one of the new ambient music godfathers, Larraaji for this spiritually uplifting collabo. I wonder what kind of timeless wisdom was imparted upon them during the recording session?

Eivind Aarset – Namib

Norwegian Metal head turned Avant-garde jazz futurist. This track is from 1998 but sounds like something that would be released on Sacred Bones today.

Ben LaMar Gay – Galveston

Tortured, spiritual jazz for confusing, post modern times.

Odd Nosdam – Cookies

Another producer that changed the way I look at beat making early. Odd Nosdam always had an ear for a more shoegaze and heavy vibe. I’m glad this guy is still doing his thing.

Vanishing Twin – Cryonic Suspension May Save Your Life

Continuing on in the weird world of bands like Broadcast and Stereolab, Vanishing Twin incorporate elements of vintage soundtrack, 60’s pop, field recordings and various other elements to make truly engaging modern music.

Stonefield – 66

The Flightless Fem Fatales are here to take you deep into a witchy prog cave and feed you a bowl of bad trip inducing psychotropic stew. I hope you’re ready to face the demons within while simultaneously head banging.

Polyrock – Your Dragging Feet

Late 70’s New York new wave influenced by the experimentation of Phillip Glass that sounds more English than American. But I guess new wave just sounds English in general.

The Wake – Host

Gothy, Scottish Post Punk who’s original line up featured Bobby Gillespie before his The Jesus & Mary Chain days.

Alexia Gredy – L’habitude (Geoff Barrow Version)

Deep french despair with a special tonal touch from producer Geoff Boarrows of Beak>.

Jonathon Bree & Clara Vinals – Say You Love Me Too

Jonathon Bree reminds me The Magnetic Fields if they had more of a krautrock influence. Groovy and romantic, psychedelic dreamscapes.

Anna Domino – Trust, In Love

Minimal 80s Avant Garde funk that borders on boogie with a touch of dub and sexy sax.

The Cleaners From Venus – Tukani (Monday Is Grey)

Proto bedroom pop pioneer, Martin Newell traded in his signature pop structure on this one for a more Dub style track with rantings about mundane English life.

Trash Kit – Horizon

One of the most interesting bands out of London right now. Danceable, post punk combined with african jazz guitars, rhythms and time signatures for a groovy trance inducing effect.

Ginger Baker’s Air Force – We Free Kings

Ex-Cream and Blind Faith drummer, Ginger Baker’s love for jazz and blues eventually lead him to Africa where he hung with Fela Kuti. Once back in England started to incorporate the afrobeat sounds into British progressive rock. Amazing stuff.

Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids – Rhapsody In Berlin

Deep Afrobeat, Jazz funk from Chicago born saxophonist and composer, Idris Ackamoor. While traveling and touring to Africa in the 70s he met Hugh Masekela, who would come o have a huge impact on his style.

75 Dollar Bill – I Was Real

An unlikely duo who met years ago on myspace came together to form the mystic, droned out two-piece, 75 Dollar Bill. Guitarist Che Chen and percussionist and horn maker, Rick Brown create a sound that is reminiscent of some lost desert blues band.
